Interning is considered part of “paying your dues” once you leave a recording school and/or are fortunate enough to get accepted to a studio internship program. But, how do you best maximize your interning experience to lead you in the right direction for your audio career? This BARMMAP panel event hosted a variety of studio owners and young engineers who have either made the transition from intern to engineer or are currently in an internship program.

Attendees walked away from this panel with current, relevant feedback from engineers working in today’s recording industry to help reach next audio career goals.

Panelists:

Mike Wells
Mastering engineer in San Francisco, most recently Mike has integrated the
Audio Outreach program at Leo’s to become a part of the BARMMAP community.
Full biography details about Mike and Mike Wells Mastering can be found here:
http://www.mikewellsmastering.com/mwm_mike_wells_bio.php

McKay Garner
McKay is a freelance producer/engineer/mixer/

musician who spent 15 of the last 16 years running Bounce, a popular studio in Los Angeles, while working with both indie and major label artists. He supported local Los Angeles schools such as SAE-Los Angeles, Los Angeles Recording School, and the Recording Institute of Technology from Musician’s Institute by hiring several interns from these schools (and unfortunately firing a few). More info about McKay can be found at http://www.mckaygarner.com

Zack Phillips
Recording and mixing engineer, Zack Phillips, is the owner of FreqLab Recording
and a staff engineer at Hyde Street studios. For the last few years, Zack has
also run the internship program at Hyde Street Studios.
http://www.freqlabrecording.com

Eric Brashear
Eric Brashear is a young audio engineer from San Francisco. Inspired by the
careers of Steve Albini, Ed Rose, Mark Trombino, and others, he specializes in
mutliple styles of recording, mixing and programming. Eric brings a wealth of
information from today’s front line of maximizing an internship and career
building.

Pete Krawiec
Pete was the chief engineer at Talking House Studios for the last several years and has worked with some of the best artists, producers, and engineers in the industry. Both as an engineer and studio owner, Pete has helped shape the careers of many interns over the years and is not afraid to help more.

Aaron Reppert
Aaron is the owner of San Francisco’s Travsonic Studios and may be the busiest man in show business. Aaron now has active interns from SFSU and City Arts and Technology High School at TravSonic Studios.
http://www.travsoniconline.com/

Einar Johnson
Originally form the Bay Area, Einar graduated from SAE Glasgow and worked in several UK studios with bands such as Mogwai and Franz Ferdinand. In 2003 he received a BA (Hons) in Recording Arts from Middlesex University. He has been involved with SAE Institute for over 10 years in audio education. In 2005 he became the Director of the Miami campus and 2008 relocated back to San Francisco to build and run the newest SAE campus there.

experiences. This is an open panel format, with Q&A encouraged. You will walk away from
this panel with current, relevant feedback from engineers working in today’s recording industry
to help you reach your next audio career goal.

Which is why TravSonic volunteers giving back to it’s neighbors and community. Especially in these economic times, people need each other for support more than ever.

Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is just a glimpse into what helping the community means to TravSonic. Stability and successful individuals start from the source.

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco partners with working families and the community to build affordable ownership homes in Marin, San Francisco and the Peninsula. This year Humanity Greater San Francisco celebrates their 20th anniversary and launch a new campaign to build 100 homes in five years. This is a great goal and TravSonic is proud to be part of a huge undertaking.
